Michigan Merit Exam

The Michigan Department of Education announced that it will administer this spring
the new Michigan Merit Exam (MME), which will include a free ACT test for all
high school juniors.

This new state assessment was signed into law by Governor Jennifer Granholm
last year to replace the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP)
assessments at the high school level.

Implementing the MME means that all 11th graders will take the new state assessment
in March 2007.  It will provide students with a regular ACT score report that they can use
to apply to a college or a university.

Students will be able to use the MME to qualify for a Michigan Merit Award scholarship to
help pay for their costs in attending a state university, community college,
or a technical or trade school.

The MME is made up of the national ACT and WorkKeys tests in mathematics and
reading, plus additional tests created here in Michigan in the areas of mathematics,
science and social studies.

Why Prepare for the MME?

There are 3 primary reasons to make an effort to prepare for the MME:

1)  College Admissions - The ACT Plus Writing component of the MME
is a critical part of the college admissions process.  Students must achieve
a competitive score on the ACT in order to gain admission to top colleges in
the state of Michigan and throughout the United States.

2)  College Scholarship - Many college scholarships programs use the ACT
scores in conjunction with high school grade point averages to determine
eligibility for awards.

3)  Michigan Merit Award Qualification - Those who exceed expectations
on the MME and meet other qualifications may earn a Michigan Merit Award.

Michigan Merit Award

The Michigan Merit Award was established by the Michigan legislature in 1999 for the
high school graduating class of 2000 and beyond.  The Award is to be used for
educational expenses at approved postsecondary institutions.

To claim the Michigan Merit Award, an eligible student must meet all program
requirements and complete a certification process that includes selecting a
payment year option by November 15th of the academic year in which the
award is used.  For example, in order to use the award in the
2006-07 academic year, the student must certify and select a
2006-07 academic year payment option by November 15, 2006.

Tips for Taking the MME!

*Get a good night's sleep the nights prior to testing.
*Eat a nutritious breakfast/lunch prior to your test.
*Read each item carefully underlining important ideas in passages
   if necessary.
*Select the best answer for all multiple-choice questions, as you're
   not penalized for guessing.
*Erase all stray marks & Change answers completely
(multiple choice items are machine scored).
*Write neatly so scorers can read your responses (remember, scorers are not
   familiar with your handwriting).
*If you use a diagram to answer a question, make sure to use words as well to
explain what the diagram is showing.
*For many of the math problems, you'll need to show/explain
how you got your answer.  Don't just write the answer down.
*If a question asks for 2 reasons, give 3 or more if you can
in case one of your first answers isn't right.
*If you don't know the exact answer, write what you can about the
general topic of the question - you may earn partial points.
