I HAVE TO PICK A MAJOR—NOW WHAT?
The most common question asked of students entering college is “What’s your major?” Many students around the country go through the same anxiety-producing experience every year. However, if you are like most students, the major you select will not a have a big impact on your future career anyway. But if it does, there are many ways to help you make the right decision. Meet with a Career Counselor. The career counselors at the university/college you plan to attend have a good sense of where their offered majors might take you with respect to your career. Also, many campus career resource centers have detailed statistics on the types of jobs their schools’ graduates have landed with various majors. Read the Undergraduate Bulletin. Look at all the majors available listed in the university/college bulletin you are planning to attend. Most of these bulletins are available on the designated college websites or in the Career Resource Center at RHS. You never know when you might come across a major that really fits your personality. Talk to Students in Various Majors. Start by asking your friends and acquaintances already in college what they are majoring in, and why. What do these students like and dislike about their major? Also ask them about the classes they have taken and the careers their major might prepare them for. Check out College Major Guides. Available in the Career Resource Center at RHS are books relating to choosing college majors with real career paths and payoffs.
