HIGH SCHOOL PLANNING

Senior Year

SEPTEMBER

  •  Meet with college admission representatives who are visiting the school. 
     Sign up in the CRC.  Click HERE for scheduled dates.

  •  Meet with your Guidance Counselor to discuss your educational preferences.

  •  Make a list of test names, dates, fees and registration deadlines. 
     Know deadlines for college admissions and financial aid applications.

  •  You MUST take the ACT or SAT at least SIX (6) weeks before the deadline
     for scores to be submitted to colleges.  Click HERE for current ACT Registration

     Application packets are available in the CRC or
     Counseling Office.

  •  Begin asking teachers, counselors and employers for letters of
     recommendation to include with your admission and/or scholarship applications.

  •  Begin your search for scholarships.  Click HERE for a current list of
     scholarship applications available at RHS or check out www.fastweb.com for
     your own specialized search.

OCTOBER

  •  Prepare your college applications.  Check with colleges to find out when
     materials must be postmarked.  Good rule to follow:  Have admissions
     applications submitted by Thanksgiving!

  • Take the ACT or SAT, if necessary.

  •  Work on admission application essays, if necessary.

  •  Visit your top school choices.

  •  Attend special programs such as college fairs and financial aid nights.

  •  Find out which financial aid applications your college choices require
     and when forms are due.

NOVEMBER

  •  Attend Financial Aid Night at Roosevelt High School on
      Wednesday, NOVEMBER 28th at 6:30pm in the auditorium.

DECEMBER

  •  Pick up a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) from the
     Counseling Office. DO NOT SUBMIT IT BEFORE JANUARY 1ST.

  •  Apply for outside funding or scholarships.

  •  PARENTS:  Save your year end payroll stub if it shows your earnings
     for the year.  You may need it for financial aid eligibility reviews by schools.

JANUARY

  •  Submit your completed FAFSA to the processor ASAP after January 1st.

  •  KEEP COPIES OF ALL FORMS YOU SUBMIT.

  •  PARENTS:  It is helpful to get your income tax returns prepared early. 
     Schools may request them to prove eligibility for financial aid.

FEBRUARY

  •  Attend SUPER GOAL SUNDAY, a free financial aid workshop to
    assist you with completing your FAFSA form.

  • Check to see if your midyear transcripts have been sent to the schools to
     which you applied.

  •  Mail your FAFSA, if you have not done so already.  Good rule to follow: 
     Submit by Valentine's Day!

MARCH

  •  Look for your Student Aid Report (SAR) in the mail.  Your SAR contains federal
     financial aid information.

  •  Submit tax forms to the financial aid office if requested. 

  •  If you have NOT received your SAR four weeks after you sent your FAFSA,
     contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center at (319) 337-5665.

APRIL

  •  Watch the mail for college acceptance letters and financial aid award letters.

  •  Make your final decision and send in a deposit by the deadline.

  •  Check with the college you've chosen to attend about the details of signing
     and returning financial aid award letters.

  •  Notify the other schools, if any, you were accepted to that you will not be attending.

  •  Watch for important deadlines at your chosen college (housing, financial aid, etc.)

MAY

  •  Finalize summer school or summer job plans.
