10th Grade

 

HIGH SCHOOL PLANNING

Sophomore Year

 

 In addition to working hard in school and being involved in a variety of activities, sophomores need to identify their abilities, aptitudes, and interests.  They should also be looking for ways to further develop their talents and skills.

  1. Continue to Monitor Academic Progress

Ø      Take geometry if you have not already done so.

Ø      Take biology and a second year of a foreign language.

Ø      Read, read, read.  Work on your writing skills.

  1. Continue to Get Involved in a Wide Variety of Activities
    and the Development of Leadership Skills

 

  1. Sign up for the PLAN Test (OCTOBER/NOVEMBER)

Ø      The PLAN Test measures the same academic skills as the ACT.
The PLAN TEST will be Thursday, October 18, 2007.
Counselors will contact students with results.

Ø      In addition to an estimated ACT composite score range,
students also receive an evaluation of their interests and
an assessment of their study skills.

  1. Consider the PSAT/NMSQT (OCTOBER)

Ø    Take the Preliminary SAT Test (PSAT) for practice.

Ø      Check the box that releases your name to colleges
so you can start receiving brochures from them.

  1. Explore and Discuss College Options

Ø      Gather information, go to college fairs, and make informal visits
to colleges.

Ø      Review your aptitudes, interests and abilities and view these
in terms of college majors and/or career options.

Ø      Become aware with general college entrance requirements.

  1. Review Your 4-Year High School Plan

Ø      Select the most appropriate courses for the junior year.

Ø      Ask your counselor about postsecondary enrollment
options and Advance Placement (AP) courses.

  1. Plan Summer Activities

Ø      Choose meaningful activities for the summer months.

Ø      Look for activities that relate to an interested career field.

  1. Update the “Activities and Awards” in Your Student Portfolio
